What is Snoring and Sleep ApnoeaSleep apnoea is a serious disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Breathing is continually interrupted during sleep. They may occur 30 times or more an hour.
There is a collapsing of the airways at the back of the throat causing no airflow resulting on cessation of breathing. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.
Sleep apnoea usually is a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts your sleep. When your breathing pauses or becomes shallow, you’ll often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep.
As a result, the quality of your sleep is poor, which makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnoea is a leading cause of excessive daytime sleepiness.
Snoring occurs when there is a partial obstruction to the airway, causing the soft tissue at the back of the throat to flap and vibrate as we breathe.
Chronic snoring can impact your sleep, health and may often indicate a more serious underlying issue, most commonly Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
